top ten - Endings

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created here at The Broke and theBookish. This feature was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We'd love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists! Each week we will post a new Top Ten list  that one of our bloggers here at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone is welcome to join. All we ask is that you link back to The Broke and the Bookish on your own Top Ten Tuesday post AND add your name to the Linky widget so that everyone can check out other bloggers lists.

Top Ten Book Endings That Left Me With My Mouth Hanging Open
(because of the cliffhanger or because it the ending was MINDBLOWING, etc.
Be careful with spoilers on this one! :P)

To be honest...there are only a few books whose endings shocked me....that I remember! ;)

Message in a Bottle  by Nicholas Sparks.  I really wished it had ended differently.  But it’s Nicholas Sparks...what do you expect.

The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James.  Really?!?!  That was the ending?

The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton.  I actually threw this book across the room...shouting, ‘Where’s the Mirth’?  My family thought I was crazy.

It seems like most books end in a rather predictable fashion.  Most endings, it seems, are rushed these days.  I blame it on the publishers who push the authors to get the book done NOW!  (I don’t know if that’s the case, but we’ve got to blame someone...the story always seems to go along so nicely and then – BAM! – it’s wrapped up in 20 pages)

Since my list was so short this time, I thought I would revisit an old list I didn’t do.

Top Ten Books I Wish I Read as a Kid

     1.      Anne of Green Gables series by L.M.Montgomery.  So many authors talk about how these books influenced them.
     2.      The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett .  A great story line, but one I have never read.
     3.      The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum.  Only saw the movie, but never read the story.
     4.      Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White . I have never read it, nor do I remember having it read to me in school..which is also shocking!
     5.      Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.  I only know the movie version...the old one!
     6.      Watership Down by Richard Adams.  Believe it or not, I recently tried to read this, and could not do it!  It might have been great for kids, but as an adult, I couldn’t waste time on a ‘bad’ book.
     7.      The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame.  I remember hearing about it while growing up, but didn’t read it.
     8.      Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.  I know, I know... how is it possible that I haven’t read this one!  I know one book that will be on my Classics list of books to read!
     9.      A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L’Engle.  I could swear that I read this, but have absolutely NO recollection...so, I don’t think I did!
     10.   A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett.  I loved the movie adaptation when our girls were younger, and tried to read the story to them, but ‘it’s not as exciting as the movie, Mommy’ stopped that venture, and I didn’t read it on my own...which I plan to do soon!

Kids today have so many more choices than when I was a kid!  It's so wonderful to see books written for kids as well as adults...and then there is the whole genre of Young Adult now, to keep those kids who were readers involved with reading through their teen years!
